Routing with BayStack Instant Internet for Dial Access Service

Configuration

The Novell network supervisor can configure the Instant Internet unit and install the software from any workstation. The installation is quite easy, and the manual’s instructions are very clear. The setup requires the following information:

  1. Telephone access number
  2. Account name and password
  3. Router IP addresses for dialup/ISDN interface and Ethernet interface
  4. SPID(s) and switch type (provided by the customer’s telephone company) for ISDN configurations

Configuration in Detail

1. Installation.

From any Novell workstation, log on as the network supervisor and open a windows session. Insert the first diskette, and run A:INSTALL.

When prompted, enter the directory path for the Instant Internet software installation. If the path is a network directory, Instant Internet can be installed on additional workstations via the network. If the path is a local directory, the Instant Internet software must be installed on each individual workstation.

Next, choose the applications to install from the provided list. Instant Internet includes WinVN News reader, WinWeb, Eudora e-mail, CuteFTP, AniTa Terminal Emulator and FTP client, and some additional administrative tools.

2. Registration.

Complete the registration information as shown in Figure 1 below. The e-mail address entered will be subscribed to an Instant Internet discussion list after the registration is completed.

3. Name the Instant Internet unit.

Each Instant Internet unit needs a unique name. Enter the unit’s name and password when prompted, as in Figure 2. These fields can be changed later, and the password can be left blank.

4. LAN-Dial Configuration.

At the Instant Internet Setup window, click the Add button in the Interfaces box. When prompted for the connection type, as in Figure 3, choose Dialup.

At the Enter Dialup Information window (shown in Figure 4), select the appropriate provider from the provider list. Next, enter the local access number and the customer’s account ID and password. Finally, select a value for Inactivity Timeout. This value is the number of minutes that the customer’s phone line can sit idle before it disconnects.

5. LAN-ISDN Configuration.

At the Instant Internet Setup window, click the Add button in the Interfaces box. When prompted for the connection type, as in Figure 5, choose ISDN.

At the Enter ISDN Information window (shown in Figure 6), select the appropriate provider from the provider list. Next, enter the local access number and the customer’s account ID and password. Finally, select a value for Inactivity Timeout. This value is the number of minutes that the customer’s ISDN line can sit idle before it disconnects.

In the next window (shown in Figure 7), choose the ISDN switch type used by your telephone company. From the Speed menu, choose 64 Kbps for 1 B channel or 128 Kbps for 2 B channels. Then fill in the SPID numbers for each channel.

6. IP Address.

Enter the IP address of the LAN-Dial or LAN-ISDN account as shown in Figure 8.

7. Default Network Interface.

After the Dialup or ISDN interface has been completed, Instant Internet requires the user to configure a default network interface. If the unit has an optional Ethernet card installed, the Select Board Type window shown in Figure 9 will appear. Choose either Ethernet or Optional Ethernet (each option will function identically).

Enter the IP address and subnet mask for the Ethernet interface, as shown in Figure 10.

8. Save Setup and Test Connection.

Configuration should now be complete. The setup window should now appear as it does in Figure 11 below.

Click the Save and Exit button to save the configuration. If the changes are to take effect immediately, the Instant Internet unit will reboot itself.

At this point, you have the option to test the configuration. To begin the test, Instant Internet will attempt to connect. After the connection is established, Instant Internet will test each DNS server. Because Dial Access accounts sometimes require a few seconds for their routes to propagate, the first DNS test may fail. However, when Instant Internet announces that the test failed (see Figure 12), choose Retry, and the test should pass on the second attempt.

For Instant Internet’s final test, the unit will attempt a reverse DNS lookup on its IP address. If we are providing DNS for you, this test should succeed. However, if the IP address does not have a domain name, the test will fail, and the customer will receive the error shown in Figure 13.

9. Optional Setup for non-Novell (TCP/IP only) Hosts.

If a customer has host computers on its network that use TCP/IP only and are not Novell workstations, then it is still possible to use Instant Internet as a demand-dial router for those hosts. In order to do this, however, the customer must subnet its Class C network address and enable IP forwarding.

In the following example, the network address is divided into 2 subnets with 128 hosts each. The TCP/IP host is on the 38.13.252.128 network, and the Instant Internet unit is on the 38.13.252.0 network. The subnet mask is 255.255.255.128.

First, configure the Instant Internet unit for a LAN-Dial or LAN-ISDN account (see steps 1-7 above) using the appropriate values for IP address and subnet mask. In this example, the IP address of the ISDN interface is 38.13.252.1, and the IP address of the Network interface is 38.13.252.129 (which is on the 38.13.252.128 network).

Next, go to the Support menu, and choose Other Settings… In the Other Settings window (Figure 14), click the box labeled Enable IP Forwarding, and then click OK.

Click Save and Exit, and allow the Instant Internet unit to reboot itself.

TCP/IP hosts on the network should then be configured with IP addresses from the appropriate subnet. The default route for each computer should be the IP address of Instant Internet’s network interface. Thus, a typical TCP/IP host in this example might have the following settings:

  • IP Address: 38.13.252.130
  • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.128
  • Default Route: 38.13.252.129
