Routing with Cisco 700 Series for LAN-ISDN Service

Setup Instructions

Configuring a Cisco 700 Series Router Via the Console

  1. Connect the blue DB-9-to-DB-9 serial cable from your terminal to the rear-panel port labeled CONFIG.

NOTE: If your terminal or PC console has a DB-25 connector, use the included DB-25-to-DB-9 adapter. If you are connecting the router to a Macintosh computer, you need a straight-through RS-422-to-DB-9 or RS-422-to-DB-25 cable.

  2. Connect the other end of the console cable to the ASCII terminal or PC.
  3. Start HyperTerminal. Click Start | Accessories | HyperTerminal to display the Connection Description window.
  4. Enter a name in the Name field of the Connection Description window. When you click OK, the Phone Number window displays.
  5. Select the COM port from the "Connect using" list to which the router is connected. For example, if the router is connected to the COM2 port of your PC, select Direct to COM2. When you click OK, the "Port Settings" window displays.
  6. Set the port as follows:
    • Bits per second = 9600
    • Data bits = 8
    • Parity = None
    • Stop bits = 1
    • Flow control = None
  7. Power on the router.
  8. Click OK to connect. You can test the connection by pressing Enter. A command-line interface prompt appears. It is assumed that this is a new connection. Once it is created, you can save the Connection Description by selecting File | Save As.

Cisco 700 Series Routers come with the following:

  • One yellow Ethernet cable.
  • One red ISDN U cable (Cisco 772 and Cisco 776 routers only).
  • One orange ISDN S/T cable (Cisco 771 and Cisco 775 routers only).
  • One RJ-45-to-RJ-11 adapter.
  • One blue configuration cable.
  • One black power supply & cord.
