Routing with Ascend Pipeline 50 for LAN-ISDN Service

Is the WAN light blinking?

  1. Connect to router. (See the Ascend Pipeline 50 Wiring Diagram.)

  2. Establish a session to the router: Either telnet to the router from a host on the same IP network or hook up an out of band console.

    If you can't get the console connected:

    • Verify terminal settings in VT100 software.
    • Make sure cable is *NOT* a null modem cable.
    • Press Cntl-L to refresh screen.
    • Menu screen should come up.

  3. Verify that the IP Address is correct.
    Configure::My Address=LAN.LAN.LAN.LAN/24
    (where LAN.LAN.LAN.LAN is the IP address of the router).

  4. Verify that the Default Gateway is correct.
    Configure::Rem Address=38.1.1.1/8

WAN light is still blinking:

  1. Verify the SPID numbers with telco.

  2. Also verify the switch type with the telco. Telco will often times tell you the type of physical switch that you are connecting to such as (5ess or dms100). The Pipeline 50 is really looking for the switching standard such as NI1. Make sure they give you the standard that they are using. NI-1, NTI, ATT point-to-point, or ATT Multi-Point.

  3. Verify with the Telco that there are no special prefixes to get an outside connection (i.e., 9 then telephone number).

  4. Verify that the bandwidth of the connection: 64K or 56K. (Some Telcos will not support a full 64K bandwidth.)

WAN light is still blinking:

Have the telco verify the ISDN line provisioning information from Ascend Communications (purchased by Lucent Technologies).

If the WAN light is off:

You can try to establish a connection by going to Ethernet::Connections::Net. Hit Cntl-D to bring up the DO menu. Press 1 to Dial.

If the LAN Session will not come up:

  1. Try to change speed to 56K.
    Make Ethernet::Connections::Net::Telco options::Data Svc=56K
  2. Turn off MPP.
    Make Ethernet:Connections::Net::Encaps=PPP
  3. Check the M31 and M30 entry in the 00-200 window:
  4. Verify that the phone number you are dialing into supports ISDN.

You connect but drop a few seconds later:

  1. Make sure that
    Configure::Send Auth=PAP and
    Configure::Recv Auth=None
  2. Verify the IP address of the router.
  3. Verify that the Idle timeout is high enough.
    Ethernet::Connections::Net::Session Options::Idle=600

The unit will still not dial out:
