Dial-Up Networking with Windows NT 3.51

Remote Access Configuration for Windows NT 3.51

From the Remote Access window, choose Remote Access.

Choose Add to create a new entry.

Fill out the Edit Phone Book Entry dialog box. You may enter any Entry Name and Description you like:




Leave the Authenticate using current user name and password box unchecked. This only works when calling another Windows NT computer.

Verify that the correct port is selected for the device shown.

Click Advanced, then click Modem.

In the Modem Settings dialog box:

  • Verify modem settings. The initial speed (bps) should be set to 38400 or higher. The modem should be able to negotiate the appropriate speed.
  • Hardware Flow control, Modem Error control, Modem compression should be enabled.
  • Enter Modem controls manually should be disabled.
  • Click OK to continue.

Click Network.




  • Select PPP.
  • Enable TCP/IP
  • Disable Request LCP extensions(RFC1570).
  • Disable NetBEUI and IPX.

Click TCP/IP Settings.




Select Server assigned IP address

Select Server assigned name server addresses

Disable Use VJ header compression and Use default gateway on remote network.

Click OK to continue.

Click on the Security button.




  • Select Accept any authentication including clear text.
  • Before Dialing and After Dialing scripts should be set to None.

Choose OK to continue.

Return to the Edit Phone Book Entry dialog box. Choose OK to save the setting.

To initiate connection:

  • Start Remote Access (located in the Remote access program group).
  • The Entry Name previously configured should be listed.
  • Select it, and choose Dial.

In the Authentication window:

  • Enter the User Name (ID only).
  • Enter the Password.
  • Do not enter a Domain Name.
  • Choose OK to dial access number.

NOTE: All Chameleon programs provided with the Remote Access signup kit (version(s) 4.1, 4.5, 4.6), intended for use with Windows 3.x, work with Windows NT except for the 'Custom' application. Just follow the setup instructions for each program.
