Troubleshooting Windows 95 Remote Access Connections

Multiple ISP Configuration (Not Connected to a LAN)

  • Click Start | Settings | Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Network icon.
  • Select the TCP/IP protocol that is bound to Dial-Up Adapter.
  • Click Properties.
  • Select DNS Configuration.
  • Select Disable DNS.
  • Click OK | OK.
  • Restart Windows 95.
  • A Dial-Up Networking icon should be configured for each ISP. Each icon will have it's own DNS configuration.

Remote Access/Windows 95 Connection Problems

Symptom: Modem disconnects 3 to 6 seconds after a connection.
NOTE: It should NOT be failing on Verifying Username/Password.

Solution 1: Disable IP Header Compression

  • In "Dial-Up-Networking", highlight the Remote Access icon.
  • Select File | Properties.
  • Click Server Type.
  • Click TCP/IP Settings.
  • Uncheck "Use IP header compression".
  • Click OK | OK | OK.
  • Double-Click the Remote Access icon.
  • Enter your Remote Access username and password.
  • Click Connect.

OR

  • Click Start | Settings | Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Network icon.
  • Select the "Dial-Up Adapter" protocol.
  • Click on Properties.
  • Select the Advanced tab.
  • Select "Use IP header compression" in the Property field.
  • Select "NO" in the Value field.
  • Click OK/Click OK.
  • Restart Windows 95.

Solution 2: Force Hostname & Domain Name into TCP/IP Stack

  • Click Start | Settings | Control Panel.
  • Double-Click the Network icon.
  • Select the TCP/IP protocol.
  • Click Properties.
  • Select DNS Configuration.
  • Select Enable DNS.
  • Enter your Remote Access username in the "Host" field.
  • Enter psinet.com in the "Domain" field.
  • Click OK | OK.
  • Restart Windows 95.

Solution 3: Setup the entire TCP/IP stack solely for PSINet Remote Access

  • Click Start | Settings | Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Network icon
  • Select the TCP/IP protocol.
  • Click Properties.
  • Select Settings:
    • IP Address: Obtain an IP address automatically
    • WINS Configuration: Use DHCP for WINS Resolution
    • Gateway: 38.1.1.1
    • Advanced: leave with defaults
    • Bindings: Select Client For Microsoft Networks
    • DNS Configuration:
      • Select Enable DNS.
      • Enter your Remote Access username in the "Host" field.
      • Enter psinet.com in the "Domain" field.
      • DNS Server Search Order:
        • 38.8.219.2
        • 38.8.220.2
  • Click OK | OK.
  • Restart Windows 95.

Solution 4: Reinstall TCP/IP Protocol

  • Click Start | Settings | Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Network icon.
  • Select the TCP/IP protocol.
  • Click Remove | OK.
  • Restart Windows 95.
  • Click Start | Settings | Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Network icon.
  • Click Add.
  • Double-click on Protocol.
  • Click Microsoft TCP/IP | OK.
  • Restart Windows 95.

Solution 5: Change Modem Driver

  • Click Start | Settings | Control Panel.
  • Double-Click on Modems.
  • Click on Add.
  • Leave "Don't detect my modem..." unchecked.
  • Click Next.
  • Select (Manufacturers) Standard Modem Types.
  • Select (Models) Standard 28,800 bps Modem.
  • Click Next.
  • Select correct Communications Port (COM Port).
  • Click Next | Finish.
  • Go back to Dial-Up Networking, Remote Access icon.
  • Highlight Remote Access icon; select File | Properties.
  • Select the Standard 28,800 bps Modem.
  • Click OK.
