Dialup Networking with Windows 95

Remote Access Configuration for Windows 95

Introduction

Welcome To 95's 32bit OS: Goodbye 16bit dialers...
  • Do NOT use:
    • Custom Connect dialer in the Netmanage Chameleon software.
    • Trumpet Winsock dialer in the SVC Internet Valet software.
    • Frontier dialer in the Frontier SuperHighway software.
    • Quarterdeck dialer in the Quarterdeck Internet Suite software.
    • SPRY dialer in the Internet In A Box software.
  • Have the Windows 95 CD or Disks handy for the following procedures.

Dial-Up Networking

Double click the 'My Computer' icon to see whether Dial-Up Networking is installed.

If it is, skip to [STEP II]. If not, please continue.

  • Click Start | Settings | Control Panel
  • Select the 'Add/Remove Properties' icon. The Add/Remove Programs Properties sheet appears.
  • Select the 'Windows Setup' tab
  • Select the 'Communications' option
  • Click the Details button
  • Select the 'Dial-Up Networking' option
  • Click OK in the 'Communications' dialog box
  • Click OK in the 'Add/Remove Programs Properties' sheet to complete the installation.

For further assistance, turn to page 56 of your Introducing Windows 95 paperback handbook. It provides the instructions on how to install the Dial-Up networking Software off your Windows 95 CD/Disks.

Checking for Multiple Winsock.dll Files

  • Click Start | Find
  • Type: winsock.dll (in the Named Box)
  • Make sure 'Look In' is set to c:\
  • Click Find Now.

You should have ONE winsock.dll in the \windows directory. Chameleon's, Trumpet's, Explore's, Compuserve's, Netcom's, etc. winsock.dll should be renamed winsock.old. More than ONE winsock.dll on your hard drive will lead to problems in resolving hostnames. The Windows winsock.dll will equal 42K in size. Make sure it is the correct one!

Multiple TCP/IP Configuration Issue

Symptom:
If you are dialed into InterRamp on a computer that is configured for your LAN, you may sometimes find that other machines on your LAN are unreachable. This is due to Windows getting confused by having more than one TCP/IP configuration in the Network Control panel.

Solution:
The Traceroute command can be used to help verify connectivity issues. At the DOS prompt type tracert w.x.y.z, where w.x.y.z is the IP address of the local LAN machine. If the trace times out on the first hop then it's probably this multiple TCP/IP configuration issue.

To resolve this problem remove the TCP/IP stack for the ethernet card in the computer.
