Configure Your Modem

The General tab window shows the general configuration of the modem (COM port, Speaker volume, and Maximum port speed).

Click on the Connection tab for additional connection settings, port settings and advanced settings. This page shows the data protocol, as well as timeout settings.

Uncheck the Wait for dial tone before dialing box if calling outside the U.S.; Windows 95 is U.S. specific here.

If the modem was purchased in a country different from the country you are presently calling from, you may need to uncheck this.

Click on Port Settings to configure optimum performance of the UART.

If the serial port uses a 16550A UART, you can set the size of its receive and transmit buffers in this window. This is a global setting which is associated with each connection (i.e. HyperTerminal, Dialup Networking, etc).

Clicking on OK or CANCEL will return you to the Connection Properties window. Once you have returned to the Connection Properties window, click on Advanced to configure modem compression, error correction, and extra modem string settings.

Error Correction and Compress Data can be checked, but may be a source of conflict, indicated by a slow connection. If this is the case, turn off either compression mode.

Choose Use flow control (handshaking) if you are running at 9600 bps or better.

The Advanced Connection Settings dialog box lets you add to the string that Windows 95 normally sends when initializing or preparing the modem. Additional strings can be entered in the Extra Settings field. Do not enter the attention (AT) command. It is sent automatically by the modem initialization string.

If Record a log file is checked, a .txt file will be created called MODEMLOG.TXT, and will be located in C:\WINDOWS. The file will contain all intialization an connection sequences.

Clicking on OK or CANCEL will return to the Connection Properties window.

Click on the Options sheet to set the terminal window, modem status, and Dial control.

Select Bring up terminal window before dialing to troubleshoot modem problems and to test connections.

NOTE: If you are receiving a Pipeline prompt in a terminal window, make sure this box is unchecked.

Clicking on OK or CANCEL will return to the Add a Dial-Up Networking Connection section.

Windows 95 setup should now be complete.
