MultiLink PPP For Remote Access

PSINet provides MultiLink PPP support for Remote Access customers, making it possible to use both B channels of the BRI for a total bandwidth of 128Kbps.

If you are a Remote Access customer and would like to utilize 2B access on your ISDN line, you must:

  • Change the pricing plan to reflect 2B access. If you are unsure what your current pricing plan is, please Click Here.
  • Have the software AND hardware to support Multilink PPP for 2B access.
  • Have the BRI correctly provisioned from the telco so that 2B is supported.
  • Have the correct initilization string within their TCP/IP stack.
  • Make sure that the hardware is capable and configured for 'Async to Sync Conversion'

  • Please have your Remote Access username and password available before attempting to make these changes.
  • There may be a lag of up to 15 minutes for your new account information to propagate to the approprite servers.

Hardware and Software Support for Multilink PPP(2B):

In order to utilize 2B channels, you must have MultiLink PPP support in the software, as well as 2B capability in the ISDN hardware.

Currently only the following are certified:

  • Netmanage Internet Chameleon 4.5 with ISDN*tek Commuter Card.
  • Netmanage ChameleonNFS 4.5
  • 3Com QuickAccess Remote (Impact) External TA/NT-1 (Firmware Rev. 2.00).

Making an ISDN BRI Line Capable for Remote Access

Most ISDN BRI Lines by default come ready for 2B access. However, some telephone companies may provide different BRI configurations to the customer or the customer may provision the BRI differently.

  • The BRI must be provisioned as 2B+D. Some telephone companies let the customer buy 1B+D BRI's.
  • Each B channel MUST be configured for DATA (or Voice+DATA).
  • Each B channel MUST have a phone number and SPID (one exception is AT&T Custom (PTP/centrex)).

Details on Netmanage 2B Access

If you are using Netmanage's Internet Chameleon or ChameleonNFS, then please note the following:

To enable 2B Access, change the phone number as follows:

1st-number-to-call/2nd-number-to-call

The PSINet ISDN numbers are the same for both B channels; therefore, if you were to dial into Albany, NY you would dial:

15184363200/15184363200 OR 15184363200/

  • Everything on the Netmanage software should stay 64K, not 128K. As long as the phone number is correct and has a slash, 2B will be done.
  • Do not click on the 128K, Data button in the hardware setup dialog box. Continue to use 64K data.
  • When establishing a 2B connection, you can watch the connection log to see the 2B calls being established and authenticated. The Netmanage log will report "Line 1 Up!" and "Line 2 Up!".
  • If by any chance the 2B call could not be completed, the Netmanage software will automatically back down to 1B.

3Com QuickAccess Remote (Impact) External TA/NT-1 2B Details

To upgrade your 3Com Impact to do 2B channels contact 3com for configurations on your particular version Click Here.

If the 3com QuickAccess has the 2.00 firmware rev., then the following commands must be entered from a terminal application:

ATS80=1 *** This enables Multilink PPP

AT&W *** This saves the configuration

This box will allow most all TCP/IP stacks to do 2B. The QuickAccess Remote box itself does the 2B translation to the PPP/TCP/IP software package on the PC/MAC.

The nature of this solution is that it WILL NOT be as efficient as the internal ISDN card/winisdn solution (netmanage/isdn*tek).

Please install the Turbocom Software that was provided with your 3Com ISDN hardware.

Configuring Bitsurfr PRO and MultiLink PPP

The <software> is the ROM version.

  • To download the latest Flash ROM Updater, Click Here.

  • The initialization string needed to access 2B channels is:

    AT&F &C1 &D2 %A2=95 @B0=2

  • The phone number must be entered twice, seperated by the & symbol.

    Example: 4363200&4363200
