Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking with ISDN

Copy the Modem ".inf" File

  • Use Windows Explorer to copy the file "msmusrim.inf" from a: to c:\windows\inf.

Install the Modem Config Software

The following will copy the files to a newly created subdirectory and create a program group with a USR Courier I icon.

  • Put in the floppy (I-MDM Config MGR WIN) and run "setup.exe".
  • Enter your Name and Company Name. If you don't have a company name don't worry about it, leave it blank.
  • Click Continue.
  • Make sure the box next to Complete Installation is checked. Click Continue.
  • Let it copy the files to the default directory. Click OK.
  • You should now have a screen the says "Installation complete".

Enter Switch and SPID Information

  • Double-click on the "USR Courier I" icon above.
  • Refer to the information provided by your phone company.
  • Click Run Configuration.
  • This is where you select the com port that your modem is on. (Please refer to your manual for this information.) Click Open COM Port.
  • Under "Data Channel" select Automatic Service Choice Under Call Type. Under "Service Profile ID", enter your first SPID. Under "Directory Number", enter the 7 digit number.
  • "Analog Device Channel" (in the Dialing method) should be set to Standard Analog. Under "Call type" make sure it is set to Analog Modem or Fax. In the "Service Profile ID" enter SPID 2. Under "Directory Number" enter the 7 digit number.
  • Under "Switch Protocol Type", select your switch type. (Important Note: You need to check if your ISDN line is either a AT&T 5ESS or a Northern Telcom DMS-100; this is very important because if you pick the wrong switch type, you will lock your ISDN line and the phone company will have to be called out to unlock it!)
  • Under "Incoming Modem/Fax Calls" choose To Data Port.
  • Under "Bus Configuration" choose Multipoint.
  • Click Test; it should test fine. Once it is tested click on Save | Exit.

Install and Configure as New Modem

  • Click My Computer | Control Panels and select "Modems".
  • On the "General" tab, click Add.
  • Put a check in the box for Don't detect my modem... and click Next.
  • Click Have Disk.
  • Click Browse to go to the C:\Windows\Inf directory.
  • When the "(modem).inf" file appears in the file field, click OK.
  • Click once on USR Courier I.
  • Select the appropriate com port, and click Next.
  • After the files copy, click Finish.

Install and Configure the Network Control Panel

Note: Before starting this walk-through, please ensure you have the original Windows 95 installation disks on hand.

  • Finding the Network Control Panel: click My Computer | Control Panel | Network.
  • Ensure that you have the following network components in your Network Control Panel:

  • To check these, open up the Network Control Panel.
  • Double click on My Computer | Control Panel | Network.
  • If these above settings are present, then hit Cancel and move straight to the New Connection Dialer Section.
  • If these are not present follow these steps:

Client for Microsoft Networks

  • Click Add. This takes you to the "Select Network Component Type" window.
  • Click Client | Add | Microsoft.
  • Click Client for Microsoft Networks.
  • Click OK. Client for Microsoft Networks should then appear in the Network window.

For Adapter

  • Click Add. This takes you to the Select Network Component Type window.
  • Click Adapter | Add.
  • Click Microsoft | Dial-up Adapter.
  • Click OK. Dial-up Adapter should then appear in the Network window.

For TCP/IP

  • Click Add. This takes you to the Select Network Component Type window.
  • Click Protocol | Add.
  • Click Microsoft | TCP/IP.
  • Click OK. TCP/IP should then appear in the Network window.
  • Now click Dial-Up Adapter | Properties.
  • From the "Driver Type" tab select Enhanced Mode.
  • On the "Bindings" tab, make sure the box next to TCP/IP is checked. Choose the "Advanced" tab.
  • Click on IPX header compression; under the value heading select No.
  • Click OK 3 times.
  • When you get the reboot confirmation request, click on Yes.

Install and Configure a New Dialer Module

NOTE: After you reboot, a window may appear that says "Unknown Hardward device found, Install software for it...". Cancel and do not perform this operation.

  • After your reboot has completed, double-click on My Computer.
  • Double-click on Dial-Up Networking. (If you don't see "Dial-Up Networking", double-click on Control Panel then double-click on Add/Remove Programs and select the "Windows Setup" tab. Double-click on Communications and put a check in the box next to "Dial-Up Networking". Click on OK twice. Win95 may ask you for your installation disks at this point. When Win95 is done reading the installation disks, reboot your computer.)

    (If there are no pre-existing Dialer moduals, Win 95 will send you straight into the "Make New Connection" program.)

  • Double-click Make New Connection.
  • Under "Type a name for the computer you are dialing" enter PSINet.
  • Select USR Courier I modem previously installed above.
  • Click Configure.

  • General tab: Under "Port", select the correct com port for the USR Courier I.
  • Under "Maximum Speed", select 115200. Do not choose "Only connect at this speed".
  • Connection tab: MAKE NO CHANGES
  • Click Advanced.
  • Ensure there is a check next to "Use flow control".

  • Options tab: Make sure that ONLY the "Display Modem Status" box is checked.
  • Click OK | Next.
  • The Area Code and Telephone Number fields should contain the area code and the phone number of your local Point-Of Presence. (You can find this information by clicking Access Numbers)
  • Click Finish. This creates a dialer icon.
  • Still in "Dial-up Networking", right-click the newly-created icon. From the menu select Properties.
  • In the bottom right of the window click Server Type.
  • Under "Type of Dial-Up Server", select PPP: Windows95.
  • Under "Advanced Options", make sure the only box checked is Enable software compression.
  • Under "Allowed Network Protocols", make sure the only box checked is TCP/IP.
  • On the bottom right of the window, click TCP/IP settings.
  • Click the Server assigned IP Address radio button.
  • Click the Specify Name Server Addresses radio button.
  • "Add Primary DNS" should be set to 38.8.219.2.
  • "Add Secondary DNS" should be 38.8.220.2.
  • "Primary and Secondary WINS" should be left at zeros.
  • Make sure "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network" are both checked.
  • Click OK 3 times and reboot your machine a final time.

Logging on to the Internet

  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Double-click Dial-Up Networking.
  • Double-click the icon you created and click OK.
  • Ensure that the user name and phone # are correct and enter the password. You can also put a check in the "Save Password' box to save the password.*
  • Click on Connect.

The machine will dial and go through the negotiations and you will be connected.

You will get the message "Welcome to the Internet!" You are now connected to the Internet. You can now use any of your Internet applications, such as your web-browsing or email client. When you want to disconnect, choose the "Connected to PSI" button from the bar at the bottom of your screen. Click Disconnect.

* Update -- If you are unable to save your password, restart your desktop and create a null password by clicking OK when prompted by Windows 95. Creating a null password does not prevent other people from accessing your desktop, but does allow you to save your password when you are using Dial-Up-Networking.
