SNMP Community Name

A community name is a plain-text password mechanism that is used to weakly authenticate queries to agents of managed network devices.

There are typically two types of community names:

  • A read-only community name that allows queries of the agent.

  • A read-write community name that allows an NMS to perform set operations.

Only a read-only community name is required to collect statistics and perform other monitoring actions for a router.
