SNMP - Basics

AMS SNMP Customer Documentation

Simple Network Management Protocol

SNMP was developed by PSI in the late 1980s in response to the challenge to manage a growing Internet. Since that time SNMP has grown to be the network standard for monitoring and managing large and small networks.

SNMP is used in two ways:

  • To manage the routers and end-systems for network stability and reliability.

  • To provide hourly averages of bits and packets traversing a network.

We monitor your router as part of your service.

Before we can use SNMP to monitor your connection, your router must be configured to allow SNMP queries. This typically involves turning on the SNMP daemon and setting a community name.

Here are sample configurations for common routers.

Cisco
Compatible 1270i
Morning Star
Livingston
Proteon

Most commercial network devices come with SNMP agent software. There are many commercial SNMP network management packages available. There are also a few public domain SNMP packages for those who have talent in software.

For detailed information on SNMP review these RFCs, as well as our AMS SNMP Customer Documentation.
