Consolidate the list using wild card characters:
* means include
! means exclude.

The example below means:

• all of alt except for alt.binaries and alt.sex and all of their subgroups
• all of rec comp and news with subgroups
• all of rec expect for all subgroups of rec.arts, but including one group rec.arts
• misc.jobs and all subgroups
• talk.politics.space (no subgroups)
