Usenet News: Newsfeed Reception Types

Customers must decide on one of the following scenarios:

  • News Feed to Local News Server
  • Multiclient 5 Client Access

News Feed to Local News Server

NNTP XFER

An active news service. This service requires a local news server running appropriate software (such as INN) to retrieve the desired newsgroups from a news server.

NNTP xfer is often chosen by LAN-ISDN and LAN-Dial accounts. Since you choose when to connect, you can do your business during the day and pull down the newsgroups you want overnight. Some customers find this service easier to use and maintain.

NNTP XMIT

A passive news service. This service requires a local news server running appropriate software (such as INN) to accept the news articles that are continuously fed from a news server.

NNTP xmit is often chosen when there is adequate bandwidth and disk space to handle a large amount of news. Dedicated Access accounts frequently choose this service to take advantage of PVC technology for a more efficient feed.

Multiclient 5 Client Access

NNTP MULTICLIENT

For those customers who do not want to dedicate the resources or bandwidth to maintain a news server at their site. This service allows 5 simultaneous client connections from any IP address within your network to read news from one of our servers. Each connection can read news individually.
