Eudora Internet Mail Server (EIMS)
Formerly Apple Internet Mail Server (AIMS)
You will need Stuffit Expander to install the EIMS software.
System requirements:
- Mac Plus or higher
- System 7 or higher
- Network Software Installer 1.5 or higher
- TCP/IP stack
Other Requirements:
Setting Up EIMS
Install the software.
There are three screens that have to be configured under the server heading:
- Preferences
- Sending setup
- Account Information
Go to Preferences.
Leave everything in the default mode except the Server Names box.
Under server names add:
- host.domain.com
- domain.com
Set the default to host.domain.com. If the default is not set to host.domain.com you will get a DNS error.
Save the above changes.
Go to Sending setup.
There should only be a star in the large box on the left.
Set the Route box to Via host.
Under the Route box there is another box for the machine that will route the mail. In this box add the Mail Relay:
Save the above changes.
Go to Account Information.
The most important field is the Postmaster account. Please set up the Postmaster account first.
Now create any other user accounts by filling in the required information.
To start out we suggest that you just enable the Postmaster and one other account. Once mail is working you can tailor the system to your needs.
Save the above changes and restart EIMS.
Configuring a POP3 Client
Now a POP3 Client must be configured.
After you have installed Eudora go to settings.
Under getting started and POP Account, put the fully qualified domain name of the machine, in this case, host.domain.com.
Under Real Name add this user's real name.
Under Personal information:
- POP Account should be the same as the Getting started field.
- Real name should be the users real name
- Return address should be usr@domain.com
Under hosts the only thing to add is in the SMTP box. In this box put in the Mail Relay. This should be the same entry used in Sending setup.
Under checking mail set the time (1 works well) and choose the APOP option.
Save all the changes and the client is configured.
If you have a DNS entry for this machine and an MX record for the domain, mail should be fully operational.
To test mail, log in as a user and send mail to echo@psi.com. This should generate an automatic reply in a minute or two. If you receive a reply, mail is working.
Common Problems
- Host name lookup failure. The machine on which EIMS resides does not have a DNS entry or the entry is not visible. Please call customer support.
- There have been reports of EIMS and BIND conflicting if they are both loaded on the same machine.
